AMA Pro Hillclimb Championship Series Recap: Oregonia
OREGONIA, Ohio (July 18, 2012) - AMA Pro Hillclimbers converged on the Dayton MC's Devil's Staircase for round four of the 2012 series and a rare night hillclimb, dubbed the “Stairway to the Heavens Hillclimb.” Teammates, Jay Sallstrom and Nate Redmann celebrated their team owner, “Dr.” Bob Shreiner's birthday with wins in both the Wiseco Unlimited Class and the Tilt-A-Rack Xtreme Class.
Redmann was dominating the Xtreme Class coming to Oregonia and left with an unprecedented four wins in a row and a nineteen-point lead over teammate Robby DeBusk in the series! Sallstrom strengthened his lead in the Unlimited Class to five points over rival, Vinny Nuzzolilli.
In the Xtreme Class, times kept getting faster as the first half progressed until Nuzzolilli, riding tenth, posted a 7.167-second ride- the time to beat. At intermission, Phil Libhart and Robby Debusk were in the number two and three spots, respectively. Redmann, riding last in the order, found himself back in fifth- three-tenths of a second off the winning pace.
Second half racing was under the lights and few Xtreme Class riders were able to move up in the standings. Nuzzolilli opted to sit out to see if his fast time would hold. Shane Green came close with a 7.303 E.T. But all eyes were on Redmann when he launched his second ride and screamed over the top with a time of 7.139 seconds, shaving 0.028 of a second off Nuzzolilli's time and forcing him to defend his position. Nuzzolilli rode slower, settling for second place. Libhart filled out the podium in third.
With four wins and a perfect score of 100 points, it seems that the Xtreme Class battle has shifted to the second spot on the series podium.
Unlimited Class points leader, Sallstrom demonstrated why his bike wears the #1 plate by laying down the only sub-seven-second ride in the first half with a 6.778 E.T. At the half, he was followed by Colby McCutcheon and Shane Green, standing second and third in order.
Sallstrom waited through the second half to see if he would need to ride. Nuzzolilli, second in series points, came closest and moved up to second place with a 6.832-second ride. At the finish, with victory already in hand, Sallstrom rode the hillclimb equivalent of a victory lap with a crowd-pleasing 6.725-second dash to the top, actually besting his own time! McCutcheon stood on the third step of the podium.
When asked how he felt about the day, Dr. Bob simply said “elated.” That sums it up.
